Hinter diesem Pseudonym verbirgt sich die Leipziger Sängerin und Musikerin Theresa Elflein. Der Titel ihres Debütalbum "anam cara" stammt aus dem Irischen und kann mit „Seelenfreund“ übersetzt werden.
Die Musik von Elfyn bewegt sich im Spannungsfeld zwischen Electro- und Avant-Pop, mal euphorisch, mal aggressiv, bisweilen sogar meditativ. Gesangsspuren werden geschichtet und verdichtet, ätherische Geigen verbinden sich mit Synths und Beats. Inspiration findet sie dabei bei Künstlerinnen wie Björk und Fever Ray, aber auch bei einer Madonna um die Jahrtausendwende - insbesondere ist es der Mut zum Risiko, den diese Künstlerinnen im Laufe ihrer Karrieren an den Tag gelegt haben.
Die Musikerin hat viele Jahre in England gelebt und den British Pop quasi direkt an der Quelle aufgesogen. Das merkt und hört man ihrer Musik an, und das ist gut so. Man beachte bitte die wunderschöne Coverversion des Songs „Isn't it a pity“ von George Harrison.
„Anam cara“ ist eine Hommage geworden. An die platonische Beziehung, die Trostspender und Kraftquelle sein kann und darf. Die Freundschaft, die Geborgenheit gibt nach Zeiten von Trennung und Wut. Es sind Stücke voller Zuversicht, aber auch Traurigkeit. „Y Poco A Poco" handelt von der Angst vor der drohenden Klimakatastrophe, von innerem Frieden und Weltschmerz zugleich, von der empfindlichen Balance zwischen Aktivismus und Akzeptanz.
Zwar ist „anam cara“ zu großen Teilen in Eigenregie entstanden, aber viele Weggefährt:innen und Mitmusiker:innen wurden während der Produktion mit eingebunden. Am deutlichsten nachzuhören ist das auf dem letzten Stück der Platte „Cheer Me On“. Freund:innen und Familie der Künstlerin kommen zusammen und bilden den Chor zum großen Finale des Albums.

This is the pseudonym of Leipzig-based singer and musician Theresa Elflein. With "anam cara" - Irish for "soul friend" - she presents her debut album. Elfyn's music moves between electro- and avant-pop, sometimes euphoric, sometimes aggressive, sometimes even meditative. Vocal tracks are layered and condensed, ethereal violins merge with synths and beats. This is sometimes reminiscent of artists such as Björk or Fever Ray, but Madonna at the turn of the millennium is also an inspiration for Elfyn - in particular the courage to take risks that these artists have shown in the course of their careers.
The musician has lived in England for many years and so she absorbed British pop directly at the source. You can hear this in her music, and that's a good thing. Please note the wonderful cover version of the song "Isn't it a pity" by George Harrison.
"Anam cara" is a tribute. To the platonic relationship that can be a source of comfort and strength. The friendship that gives refuge after times of separation and anger. These are songs full of confidence, but also sadness. "Y Poco A Poco" is about the fear of the impending climate catastrophe, about inner peace and world-weariness at the same time, about the delicate balance between activism and acceptance.
Although "anam cara" is largely self-produced, many companions and fellow musicians were involved in its creation. This can be heard most clearly on the last track of the record, "Cheer Me On". The artist's friends and family come together and form the chorus for the album's grand finale.
